His first release, Roman Candle (1994), came about when Smith's girlfriend at the time convinced him to send a tape of "the most recent eight songs that [he’d] recorded on borrowed four-tracks and borrowed guitar" to Cavity Search Records.^[19] Owner Christopher Cooper immediately requested to release the entire album of songs, which surprised Smith, as he was only expecting a deal for a seven-inch record.^[20] Regarding the record, Smith said "I thought my head would be chopped off immediately when it came out because at the time it was so opposite to the grunge thing that was popular... The thing is that album was really well-received, which was a total shock, and it immediately eclipsed [Heatmiser] unfortunately."^[19]

Smith felt his solo songs were not representative of the music Heatmiser was making: "The idea of playing [my music] for people didn't occur to me... because at the time it was the Northwest—Mudhoney and Nirvana—and going out to play an acoustic show was like crawling out on a limb and begging for it to be sawed off." ^[21]

The instrumentation of the recordings was primarily acoustic guitar, occasionally accompanied by brief electric guitar riffs or a small drum set played with brushes. Only the final track, an instrumental titled "Kiwi Maddog 20/20" (a reference to the low-end fortified wine), had full band instrumentation.

Descendents - Milo Goes To College [1982]

Milo Goes to College is the debut album by the Manhattan Beach, California-based punk rock band the Descendents, released in 1982 through New Alliance Records. Its mix of fast, aggressive hardcore punk with melody and cheeky love songs led to it being considered one of the most significant albums of the early 1980s southern California hardcore punk movement.

Milo Goes to College is often cited as one of the most significant albums of the southern California hardcore punk movement during the early 1980s. In his book American Hardcore: A Tribal History, author Steven Blush remarked that its "cheeky love songs disguised as [hardcore] blasts became the most aped formula in rock."^[1] Ned Raggett of Allmusic gave the album four and a half stars out of five, calling it "an unpretentious, catchy winner. The playing of the core band is even better than before, never mistaking increased skill with needing to show off; the Lombardo/Stevenson rhythm section is in perfect sync, while Navetta provides the corrosive power. Add in Aukerman's in-your-face hilarity and f*ck-off stance, and it's punk rock that wears both its adolescence and brains on its sleeve."^[6] Jenny Eliscu of Rolling Stone called the album "all straight-ahead punk -- 15 songs in less than a half hour, each full of metally riffs and lightning-speed plucking by bassist Tony Lombardo, who was always the band's secret weapon. Much like the Who, Descendents often used the bass for melodies and the guitar to bash out a steady rhythm. 'Parents' shows a British punk influence, with Auckerman spitting the complaint: 'They don't even know I'm a boy/They treat me like a toy, but little do they know that one day I'll explode.'"^[7]

Milo Goes to College has been included in several lists of noteworthy punk albums. Spin has listed it several times, ranking it #74 in a 1995 list of the best alternative albums and #20 in a 2001 list of "The 50 Most Essential Punk Records", and including it in a 2004 list of "Essential Hardcore" albums.^[8]^[9]^[10] In these lists, critic Simon Reynolds described the album as "Fifteen Cali-coreparoxysms that anatomize dork-dude pangs with haiku brevity", while Andrew Beaujon called it "Super clean, super tight, super poppy hardcore about hating your parents, riding bikes, and not wanting to 'smell your muff.' Obviously, Blink-182 owe this bunch of proud California losers everything."^[9]^[10] In 2006 Kerrang! ranked it as the 33rd greatest punk album of all time.^[11]

It was originally reported that Skinner said that the fifth record would be similar to Lou Reed's Berlin.^[6] He later stated in a blog that he was misquoted, and that the album would sound like the city ofBerlin, not the album by Reed. He went on, saying that the album will be "ravey".^[7]

"The final Streets album (the fifth one) will be dark and futuristic. This could not be further from the album you're about to hear, but it's what is on my mind at the moment. I feel inspired by the synthesizer exhibition we just visited in Graz [Austria] after the gig we just did."^[6]

On 6 August 2008, Skinner stated on his MySpace blog that the title of the final Streets record will be Computers and Blues, and that it will likely not be released for at least two years.^[8] He has repeatedly stated that it will be the last Streets album, remarking that he is "fucking sick" of the name and connotations that come along with it.^[9] In a Beat Stevie episode where he describes the making of Everything Is Borrowed, Skinner says that the final Streets album will be "one more banger" and will be "dancing music to drink tea to".^[10]

On 14 April 2010, Skinner announced that the first single from the album would be "I Love Phones" which will be released in July 2010. Skinner also stated that a single he recorded with rapper Giggsnamed "Slow Songs" would be included on the album and will be released in August 2010.^[11]

Everything Is Borrowed is the fourth album from The Streets. Released in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2008,^[1] and in the United States on 7 October 2008,^[2] Skinner describes the album as a "peaceful coming to terms album"^[3] and as containing "peaceful positive vibes" which stand in stark contrast to the previous album, The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living,^[4] which Skinner has described as a "guilt-ridden indulgence".^[5]

The album's first single, "Everything Is Borrowed", was released on 29 September 2008.^[6] In the months leading up to the album's release, "The Escapist" was offered online as a free download, accompanied by a music video.^[6] The video (directed by Ted Mayhem)^[7] follows Skinner as he walks 770 miles from Dover to a beach in France,^[8]^[9] a feat Skinner actually undertook.^[10] "Who Knows Who", a track Skinner recorded with the band Muse, was leaked in August 2008 and was initially believed by many to be a track from the upcoming album, until refuted by Muse.^[11]

During the recording of the album, Skinner states that he "threw away more music than is on the album now," as he was unhappy with the material recorded, but that "the album is a product of all the stuff I threw away, it was important to the album."^[12] Everything Is Borrowed will be the penultimate album from The Streets; Skinner has said that he signed a five-record deal, and that he always envisioned a five-album box set.^[12] Eight music videos were made for the album, culminating with "On The Edge Of A Cliff" being released on 7 April 2009 (videos were not made for "The Sherry End", "Alleged Legends" and "The Strongest Person I Know").^[13]^[14]

The Streets-Original Pirate Material [2002]

Original Pirate Material is the debut album by the English rapper and record producer Mike Skinner, better known as The Streets.

The album is a unique take on UK garage and lyrics dealing with everyday circumstances and occurrences. The album received massive acclaim from the music press and was embraced by fans of indie and rock music, as well as fans of garage. The album originally rose to #12 on the UK Albums Chart in 2002, but peaked at #10 in 2004 after the release of his significantly more successful second album A Grand Don't Come for Free. In Australia, Original Pirate Material peaked at #57.

In the United Kingdom, five singles were released from Original Pirate Material: "Has It Come to This?", "Let's Push Things Forward", "Weak Become Heroes", "Don't Mug Yourself" and "The Irony of It All".

The cover artwork photograph of Original Pirate Material is by German photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg called Towering Inferno. The towerblock pictured is Kestrel House on City Road, London, which has now been fitted with an wind turbine.

Pitchfork Media rated the album as number ten on their list of the top 100 albums of 2000-2004. They later placed it at 36 on their list of the best albums of 2000-2009.

In March 2003, NME placed Original Pirate Material at number 46 on their list of the "100 Best Albums of All Time".

In November 2009, NME placed Original Pirate Material at number 9 in their list of the "100 Best Albums of the Decade". and Observer Music MonthlyObserver Music Monthly announced Original Pirate Material as the best album of the decade. The critic Simon Reynolds placed the album at the top of his favourite albums of the 2000s list, with a "special 'in a class of its own' award."

Em Julho, sempre às quartas, a ZDBMÜZIQUE apresenta mais um Ciclo de Cinema dedicado à música. A singularidade das propostas musicais, não só unifica as quatro sessões, como representa um dos critérios fundamentais da nossa selecção. Ao longo do ciclo, atravessaremos as últimas três décadas de criação musical em busca do que se posicionou nas margem e se alimentou da exploração dos limites, construindo assim um legado de absoluta pertinência artística. Maioritariamente provenientes das artes visuais, estes artistas ofereceram à criação musical uma procura da individualidade e uma rejeição profunda do expectável. Esta não-pertença é o que os pode unir.

Assim irão ser apresentados 4 filmes que gravitam nas raias do documentário/documento artístico e que de forma transversal nos ajudam a perspectivar uma abordagem transgressora e exploratória da música.

Na primeira sessão, exibiremos o filme, em formato Super 8, de Ericka Beckman, artista nova-iorquina que em “135 Grand Street, New York, 1979” perspectiva, de forma transversal, toda uma geração de artistas – de Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham ou Theoretical Girls – que enformaram o movimento No Wave.

As curtas-metragens inaugurais da filmografia de Vivienne Dick em que participaram vários artistas e músicos como Pat Place (The Contortions & Bush Tetras) e Lydia Lunch, revelam não só uma linguagem musical, mas também uma visão política e social emergente do meio Nova-Iorquino dos anos 70 .

Herdeiros maiores dos nomes supracitados, os Sonic Youth serão aqui representados através dos Noise Films realizados por Lee Ranaldo, Leah Singer e Chris Habib. Da autoria de Ranaldo, a mostra seleccionada, detém-se sobre o trabalho performativo da banda nova-iorquina.

Finalmente, o trabalho em curso de João Milagre pretende ser um documento singular e pioneiro no registo da música exploratória portuguesa, e surge de uma urgência em captar a essência de um grupo de artistas e músicos – Manuel Mota, Tropa Macaca, David Maranha, Afonso Simões, entre outros - que têm vindo a redefinir um novo paradigma na nova música portuguesa, criando um espaço nunca antes habitado. Lost in the Sound of Separation is the sixth album by American metalcore band Underoath. The album was released on September 2, 2008. The album title is taken from a line of the lyrics of "We Are the Involuntary". In an interview with MTV News about the effort, the band stated it featured 11 songs that total around 42 minutes. This is the last full length Underoath record to feature longtime drummer and clean vocalist Aaron Gillespie, as per his departure on April 5th, 2010.

The album has been nominated for a Grammy Award at the 52nd Grammy Awards for "Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package". Prior to the album's release it was said to be a lot "heavier" and "darker" than Underoath's previous album Define the Great Line. A handful of people from MTV were the first to listen to several of the songs off the album, reviewing afterward that "The songs were anthemic, feedback-filled numbers that build slowly to their thunderous, ear-splitting crescendos."

Define the Great Line is the fifth album by American Christian metalcore band Underoath. The album was released in the United States on June 20th, 2006 along with a limited edition version containing exclusive artwork and DVD. For the recording of this album Underoath's usual producer, James Paul Wisner, was replaced by Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage and Matt Goldman, who had previously worked with former labelmates Norma Jean.

The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 charts selling over 98 000 copies in its first week and becoming the highest charting Christian album on the Billboard 200 since 1997. By the end of 2006 the album had been certified gold by the RIAA.The album's lead single Writing on the Walls was nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award. The album received generally positive reviews. AbsolutePunk called it a 'masterpiece of the genre' and album that 'can never be forgotten' while Allmusic called Define The Great Line 'blistering and occasionally majestic'.

They're Only Chasing Safety is the fourth album by American metalcore band Underoath. The album was released on June 15, 2004 through Solid State Records. Prior to recording it was ready to be recorded with Underoath founder and frontman Dallas Taylor, the album's original title was intended to be "Dear Misery" and would feature songs such as "Coryn's Defeat", and "Look Past the Bright Lights" which is now "Reinventing Your Exit", but instead was replaced with the band's current lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain.

As of 2005, They're Only Chasing Safety has sold more than 218,000 copies, with the re-release selling an additional 279,000 copies, making a combined sales of more than 500,000 copies in the US alone. All original version cover photography and album artwork was created by Kris McCaddon, formerly of Embodyment and Demon Hunter, and currently of The Famine. On October 4, 2005, the album was re-released through Tooth and Nail, which includes four bonus tracks, and a bonus DVD.

All of the bonus tracks that are featured on the special edition of the album except for "I've Got 10 Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain't Gonna Do Jack" were taken from the band's session with Matt Goldman and are early pre-production demos of songs which would later grow to become the regular album tracks. "The 80's Song" is an early version of "It's Dangerous Business Walking out Your Front Door", "You're So Intricate" is an early version of "I'm Content with Losing," and "SmicTague" is an instrumental adaptation of "Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape." Prior to the release of They're Only Chasing Safety, a few of these early version tracks were used to promote the album; the song "You're So Intricate" had been featured on a Tower Records exclusive Tooth & Nail Records compilation and a demo version of "Young and Aspiring" had been posted on the Underoath website.

"I've Got 10 Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain't Gonna Do Jack" first appeared as the opening track on SmartPunk.com's Music On the Brain Vol. 1 compilation, which was released on July 20, 2004. The song would later appear on the 12" vinyl and Japanese versions of They're Only Chasing Safety.

The intro of "Young and Aspiring" was inspired from the intro of the Pantera song "Suicide Note Pt. I", that appears on their eighth album The Great Southern Trendkill.

The title of the song "Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape" is a reference to the 1999 film Magnolia, where it can been seen in the synopsis on the DVD case.

Um dia desta semana ia eu a caminho do Hospital a ouvir a Radar e apoderou-se de mim uma vontade (semelhante á de quando vos apetece aquele arroz de tomate com peixe frito que a vossa mãe tão bem sabe fazer) de ouvir esta música de Caribou (linda não é? e o video? upa, upa). Pois é meus amigos, umas duas rotundas num futuro que se tornou presente e heis senão que para meu gáudio começa a dar a tão desejada música (pequenas coisas que alegram um dia). So me apeteceu lançar os braços no ar e começar a fazer a onda mas estava sozinho e as rotundas não se fazem sem a assistência de mãos.

Toda esta conversa da trêta para afirmar perante vós que a Radar é a melhor rádio de sempre.
